Book Review: Starters

I first found Starters by Lissa Price in a book store. The intriguing cover caught my attention and I had a gander at the blurb.

“In a world ravaged by war and genocide, becoming someone else is now possible. Sixteen-year-old Callie discovers the Body Bank where teens rent their bodies to seniors who want to be young again. When her neurochip malfunctions, she wakes up in the mansion of her rich renter and finds she is going out with a senator’s grandson. It’s a fairy-tale new life, until she discovers her renter’s deadly plan.”

The idea was very interesting but I decided to not buy it and have a look online. I then found it on Amazon for my kindle at $9.99 instead of the $20 for the paper version. At $10 I bought the kindle version instantly.

I wanted to read it right away but I was head deep into the second Game of Thrones book, I still am. Those things are long and I needed a break so set it aside and picked up Starters. Two days later I’d finished and I wish the second one was out so I could start devouring it now.

I love the mystery of this story. I had no clue what was happening just like the protagonist, Callie. I simply love those sort of books when you and the protagonist are sort of working together on the mystery. We were both discovering the mystery of Prime Destinations and who was trying to use Callie’s body to kill.

The story holds you with every twist and turn. I kept trying to think who was involved, what would happened next? It was absolutely brilliant.

Callie’s character is easy to connection to. You can see she does everything for her brother to protect him and it’s very believable and pulls at the heart strings. And of course there is love interests which play a great role in the story.

And I can’t do a review about this book without talking about the whole concept of Starters. A war many years ago leads to the death of everyone between the ages of 20 and 60, leaving only the young and the old. The young struggle to survive without their parents dead unless they have grandparents. And now the old want to be young again and so rent out young people’s bodies. Mind blowing! But amazing. There’s so much more I could say but I really don’t want to spoil anything for you.

I must say my favourite part is the ending. I won’t give anything away because finding out was my highlight of this book. I actually gasped and said “Oh my God!” out loud when I read the ending. To be honest for a while I thought it was going to be a one off book but then BAM everything changed and it leaves you with so many mysteries for the next installment.

Enders is Lissa’s next book in the Starters series and I will be buying it the minute it is available. Amazing book.
