Insurgent by Veronica Roth is the much anticipated second book to follow her successful debut novel Divergent. I managed to swim through this book in two days after having read the first book two days earlier.
Insurgent picks up right where Divergent left off. Tris have survived an mental attack from the knowledge seeking faction of Erudite, but now a war is brewing and she’s struck in the middle of it. Many of the people she loves are dead and she’s haunted by the friend she shot who was under mind control. Tris’ identity has never been so erratic and she doesn’t know how to cope.
This book is more action packed than the last one which is to be expected. The action is non stop with so much mysterious happening all at once. You won’t know who to trust.
Tris’ inner struggles are what carry the story too, she has done things and said things and now she’s not entirely sure what’s right and wrong. The struggle with Tobias is also one that keeps you going, the emotion and wonder of their relationship is a rollercoaster of ups and downs.
The same themes and issues carry over from the last book -identity, society, belonging ect- but they are more rounded now that you can see the other factions whereas last time it was from Dauntless point of view. The other factions’ way of life are very different and interesting. It takes on a unique perspective of our own world’s values like a mirror image.
Insurgent really is an great novel with a cliffhanger to die for. I am counting down the days until Veronica Roth releases book 3. I can’t wait to see how the story ends and what’s happens to Tris once she knows the truth.
